HUGO’S HABIT OF READING

The Barings Book Bus is a full-service literacy bus and program that inspires elementary students ages 5 through 11 to develop a love for reading. Beginning Oct. 1, for the 2021 / 2022 school year, the Barings Book Bus will be available for in-person visits to elementary schools in Charlotte and surrounding areas.

The Barings Book Bus will continue to follow CDC and North Carolina State health and safety guidelines / protocols. All Barings Book Bus Crew Members and performers are fully vaccinated.

  • Hugo the Hornet and the Barings Book Bus are available to visit schools within a 35-mile radius of Charlotte.
  • Up to 75 students from each school will be allowed to go onto the bus and pick out a free book. Hugo the Hornet and The Book Bus MC will be there to meet and greet the students.
    • Please note, Hugo will only appear in and around the Barings Book Bus.
  • A Hugo “Golden Ticket” pdf document will be sent prior to arrival for schools to print and create an incentive program to choose students to go onto the bus. Examples include:
    • Hardest working reader.
    • Behavior points.
    • Reading goals accomplishments
    • Etc...
  • The day of the visit, each school will receive “Hugo’s Habit of Reading” video featuring Hugo the Hornet and various Hornet’s personalities emphasizing the importance of literacy.
  • After 21 days of reading, a second video from the Hornets will be sent congratulating students on reading every day to create a lifelong habit of reading.
  • Hugo and the Barings Book Bus will provide custom Hugo bookmarks for every student at the school to mark their reading progress.

PICK & READ PROGRAM

The Charlotte Hornets Pick & Read program will serve as a virtual literacy resource for elementary & middle schools. Hugo and the Hornets MC will host a series of Zoom webinars with eight authors from diverse backgrounds, whose books feature subject matter around social justice or racial equality and/or highlight children of color.

  • Eight Zoom webinars to occur once per month through the school year
    • October through May
    • Exact dates and times TBD
  • Webinar sessions will last approximately 30-45 minutes
  • Schools or educational organizations can apply to attend
  • Up to 500 participants can register to attend per session
  • The Hornets will collaborate with publishers and local bookstores to donate 50 books from the featured author to student participants via random drawing
    • Books will be delivered to the winning school/participants for distribution

The Charlotte Hornets host a virtual book drive to benefit Promising Pages Books on Break, a free program designed to provide books for children from underserved area schools to enjoy when school is out of session.

TECHNOLOGY LAB MAKEOVER

The Charlotte Hornets Foundation presented Winding Springs Elementary with a Technology Lab Makeover funded by a $25,000 Education Grant. Winding Springs Elementary is a Title 1 school serving over 700 students who access the technology lab daily. This makeover provided 30 new laptops and mice, 30 new desks and chairs, along with a new table and laptop cart. The Charlotte Hornets are committed to promoting equal opportunity in the classroom.

HORNETS EDUCATION GRANTS: FREE LIBRARY INSTALLATION

Charlotte Hornets Foundation installed 18 libraries across Charlotte in an effort to promote & increase accessibility to literature. The Charlotte Hornets Foundation presented Mecklenburg Park & Recreation with a $10,000 check to assist with upkeep of the libraries
